The project

As part of its process to obtain THQSE certification, the CNDG (Clinique Notre-Dame de Grâce in Gosselies, Charleroi) decided to work with SOWoods on the biodiversity aspect.

The first phase took place in March 2025. This involved:

  1. Landscaping the area surrounding the car park reserved for hospital staff: To achieve this, we opted to plant a natural hedge of native species across more than 300m². This has enabled the reforestation of an unused area, which previously had little biodiversity, situated between the CNDG car park and the E42 motorway, which runs right alongside it.
  2. Making this new area accessible to small wildlife: We created openings in the fence to allow small animals, such as hedgehogs, to access this green space.
  3. Increasing the number of habitats for biodiversity on the site: Whilst waiting for the planted hedge to grow and create more and more micro-habitats for local wildlife, we have installed nesting boxes and insect hotels on the site and near the hedge.

This initiative connects green spaces with one another, thereby creating micro-corridors for local biodiversity. Situated on the edge of an urban area, this site is a perfect example of a potential transition zone for biodiversity.
